Storm Channel Improved by ASCE Students

A dozen students from the ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) Chapter at Cal State Fullerton pitched in to organize citizen volunteers at the annual Inner Coastal Cleanup event.

Coastal Cleanup Day is a coordinated statewide effort to remove trash and other debris from beaches as well as the inland streams that empty to the ocean during rainy season. Many Orange County cities have participated for many years to do their share and increase public awareness of this serious problem.

Members of the student chapter of ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) appreciate the importance of clearing watersheds and made time to do something about it. The Brea work site enjoyed a big assist by students from CSUF who served to oversee sections of Brea Creek during the city's volunteer effort. During a four-hour period almost 300 volunteers spent time along key sections of the main stormwater channel. The ASCE students were on hand to help direct them to where coverage was needed and assist with removal of particularly large or difficult items.

The results: 2,800 pounds of trash removed along a 3.5 mile length of the Brea channel. For the overall county, there were a total of 36 worksites that collected over 55,000 pounds of trash along 64 miles of watershed.

Participation by these college students was greatly appreciated and served as a wonderful role model for younger kids who were in attendance with parents or scouting groups.
